Mercyful Fate - Melissa. 12” LP. Clear Red. 2014 Reissue
Here we have a very influential Heavy Metal classic. MErycful Fate’s first album. I was introduced to king Diamond first throguh a friend. Then eventually Mercyful Fate from an ex gf. I didn’t hear this album for another or so later but its obviously known to be nothing but a masterpiece. This album was a big influence to Thrash and Black Metal(Especially Metallica). And Kings vocals on this. Oh damn, very untouchable. Great metal musicians, with this high singer dressed like a Demon like Vampire singing about Satan. Heavy Metal very much so.
The first song is “evil”. And right the drums go nuts and that riff is crazy and then Kings Vocals start echoing. That shit happened in like 10 seconds and its a true “Holy shit” moment. The riffs are nothing but pure Heavy Fucking Metal. And the way King changes his voice around to a opera way to a calm creepy sound. But its not just the King whos the genius. Its definitely Hank Shermann and Michael Denner(who went with Kings solo as well). These guys are fucking fantastic guitar players. The only thing I dislike about this song is that little “Eye Of The Tiger” part. Other than that, this song is pure Heavy Metal madness. “Curse Of Pharaohs” has King doing most of his normal singing instead of the high notes. Good song but nothing amazing. “Into The Coven” has this mid evil folk intro. This one is kinda slow calm headbanger. During the middle it slows down and King does this mind blowing almost religious in a way vocal part. After that we get some good solos for the rest of the song. “At The Sound Of The Demon Bell”. King first song about Halloween. King does the vocal switches a lot in this one. Toward the end King is just singing his demonic soul out and it fuckin rules. But rules more is “Black Funeral”. My favorite off the album for sure. The intro music with the badass drumming and riffing. Then King high voice singing about Lucifer. King voice is the best in this song. So are the guitars, bass and drums. Mercyful Fates finest moment in this album. “Satans Fall” starts off normal. But a minute passes and King is screaming his ass off. This song is like 11 min long and its one of those were uses to voices to sing to each other in a way. A lot of jamming in this song. A lot. Then the album ends with the title track. A soft little note then crazy riffing. King shows he can sing beautifully with doing high notes. Half the song is very soft. It gets heavy at times but even tho the music is soft its still done in MF way and the riffs again are amazing. And they end it and they think Melissa is still with us. Even though I love the first half of King Diamonds discogrpahy I only truly love and enjoy Mercyful Fate’s first two. But most will agree thats all you really need from them anyways. King is back up on his game playing live again. Will Mercyful Fate ever see the light again? Who knows. Bring the black box to the altar. Now raise your hands and do the sign. All hail Satan, yes hail Satan.
